How package tracking really works

A clear, honest explanation of what happens behind a tracking number: scans, checkpoints, carriers and why your parcel sometimes goes quiet.

The tracking number is a key, not a live GPS

When you buy something online, the carrier assigns your parcel a tracking number. It is best understood as a unique key in the carrier's database rather than a live GPS tracker. Your package is not broadcasting its position minute by minute; instead, the carrier records an event every time the parcel is physically scanned at a known point in its network.

This is the single most important thing to understand about tracking. Everything you see on a tracking page — the timeline, the locations, the statuses — is a series of these scans stitched together. Between two scans, the parcel is still moving even though nothing new appears on screen.

What a 'scan' actually is

A scan happens at handover points: when the courier collects the parcel, when it arrives at or leaves a sorting hub, when it is loaded onto a plane or truck, when it clears customs, and finally when it is delivered. Each scan creates a checkpoint with a timestamp and, usually, a location and a short description.

Because scans only occur at these fixed points, a long-distance parcel can legitimately show no updates for a day or more while it sits on a cargo flight or crosses a border. The absence of a new scan is normal and does not mean the shipment is lost.

How Piplo turns raw scans into a clear timeline

Carriers describe the same event in dozens of different ways. One might say 'Departed facility', another 'Item processed', a third 'In transit to next facility'. Piplo reads these raw messages and normalizes them into a small set of clear, consistent statuses: information received, in transit, customs, out for delivery, delivered and exception.

We also try to infer the transport mode — plane, road, ship, facility or customs — but only from the wording the carrier actually used. We never add a stage that the carrier did not report, and we never draw a fake route between two points. The dashed line on the map connects real checkpoints; it is not a simulated path.

Why detection sometimes fails

Piplo tries to detect the carrier automatically from the shape of your tracking number. Many formats are recognizable, but they are not globally unique — different couriers around the world reuse similar patterns. When we cannot be confident, we say 'carrier not identified' and let you pick the courier manually, rather than guessing and sending you to the wrong data.

For international orders, the parcel may also pass through several carriers: an origin courier in one country, an airline, and your national postal service for the final leg. The company that delivers is often not the one printed on the original label.

Getting the most from your tracking

Copy the full tracking number without spaces, and don't confuse it with your order number, which is issued by the shop. If nothing appears at first, wait a few hours — freshly printed labels take time before the first scan.
